The decision to undergo gastric balloon therapy must be made in consultation with a qualified doctor. Certain conditions would exclude gastric balloon implantation. A partial list of these conditions includes:

There are two main challenges with gastric balloons. Firstly, some patients suffer from balloon intolerance e.g. extended nausea or vomiting – which, in severe cases, can require early removal of the balloon. Secondly, gastric balloons tend to lose some of their effect after around 4 months, as the body adapts to having the balloon in place, and patients may slow or stop losing weight.
The Spatz Balloon is the ONLY adjustable gastric balloon available worldwide, optimising both comfort and weight loss results by offering a personalised experience. It is also the only gastric balloon in Australia approved for 12-months duration…a full 6-8 months longer than other gastric balloons!
The Spatz Balloon is placed into the stomach by way of an endoscopy – a procedure where a doctor uses a long, flexible tube with a camera at the end to access your stomach through your mouth and oesophagus. This procedure requires a light sedation and takes approximately 20 minutes without any cuts or scars. Patients are typically discharged from the hospital on the same day after being monitored for 1-2 hours to ensure they recover well.
The Spatz Balloon is the only gastric balloon that can be adjusted (remove or add fluid) to improve comfort and weight loss results.
Down adjustment:
Some patients have difficulty adapting to the presence of the balloon in the stomach and may experience extended nausea, vomiting or discomfort. A Spatz Balloon downward adjustment (removing fluid from the gastric balloon) is often successful in providing relief of symptoms, negating the need for early removal.
Upward adjustment:
Over time (typically around 3-4 months), your body adjusts to the balloon, reducing its effectiveness. This is a normal and an expected phenomenon. An upwards adjustment (adding fluid to the gastric balloon) at this time can increase the size of the balloon, rejuvenating its effect and improving weight loss.
No. That Spatz Balloon is discrete and cannot generally be seen by others.
That’s great! The first step on your Spatz Balloon journey is speaking with our team members who will help book you in with one of the doctors at the clinic closest to you. The typical wait time to see one of our doctors is 1-3 weeks.
After the Spatz Balloon is removed at 12 months you should continue your healthy lifestyle habits you’ve developed with the help of your Spatz Program support team. Some of our clinic offer support programs beyond 1 year which helps to keep you on the right track.
It is not advised due to the potential that you will not be getting enough nutrients to support the development of a healthy baby. For patients who have a gastric balloon and become pregnant, it is recommended to remove the balloon during the pregnancy. Your health care team will assist in the removal if you become pregnant during your gastric balloon treatment. The recommended wait period after delivery is typically 6 to 12 months. Your delivery and breast feeding circumstances will impact on your doctor’s recommendation as to when to get a gastric balloon postpartum.
